The CottonConnect organization has released its Impact Report for 2024, revealing significant advancements in sustainable cotton farming practices through its REEL Cotton Programme. The report highlights key achievements in environmental sustainability, farmer profitability, and agricultural innovation across multiple countries, including India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, China, Egypt, and Turkey.

    Key Achievements in Sustainable Practices

The 2023-24 results from the REEL Cotton Programme indicate substantial reductions in the use of harmful agricultural inputs while simultaneously improving yields and profits for farmers who participated in the program. Notable outcomes include:

    • Reduction of Chemical Pesticide Use: Decreased by 21.4%

    • Reduction of Chemical Fertilizer Use: Decreased by 17.5%

    • Reduction of Water Usage: Decreased by 21.9%

    • Increased Yield: Improved by 6.1%

    • Reduced Input Costs: Decreased by 14.3%

    • Increased Profit: Rose by 26.1%

These results demonstrate that farmers involved in the REEL programme not only enhanced their income but also contributed positively to environmental health by minimizing harmful inputs.

    CEO’s Vision for Future Initiatives

Alison Ward, CEO of CottonConnect, emphasized the importance of collaboration among stakeholders in the textile sector, including brand partners, government associations, and farmers. She noted that the REEL Cotton Programme launched a new portal for its TraceBale system, enhancing the traceability of cotton products through unique QR codes and DNA markers. This initiative aims to provide transparency from the field to the final garment.

In 2023-24, CottonConnect trained over 250,000 farmers in regenerative agriculture practices, resulting in measurable improvements in soil health and biodiversity. The upcoming transition to a REEL Standard in April 2025 is expected to bolster program validation and enhance claims related to sustainability outcomes.

Environmental Impact and Climate Change Mitigation

The report also includes results from a Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) study, which quantified the program’s impact on greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. The findings illustrated that decreased irrigation and fertilizer usage could lead to a potential reduction of 1.20 kg CO₂ equivalent per kilogram of fiber produced. Additionally, the program showed:

    • 35% Saving Potential in CO₂ Emissions

    • 36% Reduction in Water Consumption

    • 25% Reduction in Acidification Potential

    • 42% Reduction in Ecotoxicity Potential

These metrics clearly indicate that sustainable farming practices can significantly lower environmental impacts while enhancing productivity.

    Transformational Farmer Stories

The report features success stories like that of Chandrakantbhai, a farmer from Gujarat, India, who adopted drip irrigation techniques through the REEL Cotton Programme. By transitioning from traditional flood irrigation to drip systems, he reduced water usage by 25-30% and increased his cotton yield by 30%. His journey exemplifies how adopting innovative agricultural methods can lead to substantial improvements in both environmental sustainability and profitability.

    Commitment to the Future

CottonConnect continues to push forward with initiatives aimed at increasing the resilience of cotton farming communities. The organization is also focused on supporting farmers in adapting to climate change challenges, ensuring they can thrive in an evolving agricultural landscape. The Primark Cotton Project, now in its 11th year, remains committed to training farmers in more regenerative practices to boost cotton production and profitability by 2030.

In summary, the 2024 Impact Report from CottonConnect highlights the successful implementation of sustainable practices within the cotton industry. These initiatives not only enhance farmer incomes and environmental health but also pave the way for a more resilient and responsible future in cotton farming. With ongoing support and innovative programs, CottonConnect aims to continue transforming the agricultural landscape for generations to come.
